Freedom of Information request reference no.: F2006/88
Request for the following information: ‘the amount spent by your department on procuring external legal advice in 2005-2006… which service provides were appointed for that year by your office.’
DFID uses four external legal advisers in the UK. They are:
-
The Treasury Solicitor’s Department
Crown Agent Legal (CA Legal)
The FCO Legal Advisers
Office of the Solicitor to the Advocate General (OSAG)
The FCO Legal Advisers and OSAG do not charge for their services. We have negotiated framework agreements with both Treasury Solicitors and CA Legal through which our departments can seek small pieces of legal advice, payable at an agreed hourly rate. The aggregate costs arising from these agreements are shown below.
Legal Adviser |
2005-2006 |
Treasury Solicitors |
£78,333 |
CA Legal |
£572,282 |
Total |
£650,615 |
Departments within DFID may also enter into separate contracts with both Treasury Solicitors and CA Legal for larger pieces of work at individually agreed rates and our overseas offices may also engage local solicitors for legal advice on foreign domestic issues.
