...in formal education

school boys in classOur main aim in relation to the formal education sector is to promote more effective and widespread teaching of development issues in schools. We are currently working with key governmental and non-governmental educational bodies across the UK to provide guidance on how teachers can incorporate development issues into their teaching. There is a guidance document for schools in Englandadobe pdf (521 kb) and one for Scottish teachersadobe pdf(685 kb). Guidance covering the curricula in Wales and Northern Ireland is to follow.

Another important part of our work involves ensuring that teachers have access to development education resources, both material, and human and organisational. In 1999, we commissioned an Audit of Formal Sector Development Education Resources to provide a clearer understanding of what is currently available. The external linkGlobal Dimension website includes over 500 evaluated resources for teachers to use across the curriculum.

Enabling Effective Support (EES)

school children in the classroom

The initiative supports the development of regional strategies that involve voluntary and non-governmental organisations, government agencies and local authorities in working together, responding to the challenges of educating young people in a changing, globalised society.

The regional programmes that have developed have three things in common:

  • they enable planning and implementation of collaborative programmes that develop a global dimension in education at local, regional and national levels;
  • they involve teachers, initial teacher educator (ITE) tutors, advisers and others working together to develop their own responses to the challenges;
  • they support schools and teacher training colleges to integrate global dimension issues, concepts and approaches into curriculum and development plans.

Please note we are currently revising the EES booklet and it is due to published early next year
