Biography: Sue Owen, Director General Corporate Performance

Sue Owen, Acting Permanent Secretary, Department for International DevelopmentSue Owen joined the Department for International Development (DFID) in May 2006 as Director General for Corporate Performance. Sue acted as Permanent Secretary December 07 – March 08. Her portfolio at DFID covers finance and business planning, human resources, communications and IT.

Sue began her career as an academic teaching at Cardiff University in the economic faculty and Centre for Population Studies. Her research with colleagues at LSE and London School of Hygiene focussed on women in the labour market.

Sue moved to HM Treasury in 1989, and worked in a variety of posts including macro forecasting, the labour market and Europe. In 1998 she worked on family policy at the Number 10 Policy Unit and over the following 3 years was economic counsellor at the British Embassy in Washington DC. She returned to the Treasury to run the five tests assessment of UK membership of the Euro and managed the national debt.

Sue is married to Professor Martin Albrow and has one son and three stepsons.
