Greater cooperation between African States at the regional and continental level should result in faster economic growth and increased progress towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals.

The need for donors to become more involved in supporting Africa States on Pan African and Regional issues has been highlighted by theExternal linkCommission for Africa, G8 and the European Union.

DFID: Working to Reduce Poverty in Africa

DFID works with our African partners to address regional issues, including working with key Pan African institutions such as the African Union (AU) to strengthen their ability to tackle these problems. DFID’s ten key areas of work are:

DFID working to reduce Conflict and Humanitarian crisis in Africa

To reduce conflict and save lives in Africa DFID has a specific Conflict and Humanitarian unit which works to relieve suffering and protect human dignity in Africa by coordinating and supporting the delivery of high quality and high impact conflict preventionpdf(69 kb) and humanitarian response programmes.

Pan African and Regional Institutions

To encourage greater integration and cooperation, African States formed the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, which was replaced by theExternal linkAfrican Union (AU) in 2002. The day-to-day management of the AU is undertaken by the AU Commission. Member States are represented in the theExternal linkPan African Parliament. The main objectives of the AU are:

  • The promotion of accelerated socio-economic integration of the continent.
  • Build a partnership between governments and all segments of civil society and
  • the promotion of peace, security and stability.
