Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone has amazing mineral wealth, yet 26% of its people live in extreme poverty. Following the civil war of 1991-2002, the country has made remarkable progress in consolidating peace and rebuilding its infrastructure. However, more than 70% of women and 50% of men are illiterate, and the infant, child and maternal mortality rates are the worst in the world.

DFID’s main challenges in Sierra Leone are:

  • security and stability
  • governance
  • economic growth.

How we've helped

Mind where you go in Sierra Leone

A boldly worded sign in Ogoo Farm, Sierra Leone is hard for villagers to ignore. Recently, a DFID-backed community initiative has led to a flurry of toilet-building in Ogoo, and this billboard reminds locals that, when nature calls, the new latrines are the places to go.

"Kushe police dem!" - Well done police!

Last summer's elections in Sierra Leone could easily have descended into violence. But - thanks to DFID-funded training in non-violent crowd control - the police stayed fully in control as the nation went to the ballot box.
