How DFID is tackling climate change
DFID is committed to helping poor countries:
- Develop in a cleaner, ‘greener’ way;
- Prepare for the impacts of climate change; and
- Get a fair deal from a global climate change agreement.
We are:
- Pushing for a comprehensive, effective and fair global climate deal;
- Helping poor countries to take part in negotiations;
- Helping developing country governments to prepare for the impacts of climate change;
- Making sure all DFID’s programmes in developing countries take account of climate change;
- Helping poor communities to adapt to a changing climate.
We are spending:
- £800 million through the Environmental Transformation Fund (ETF) to help fight climate change and poverty;
- £5 million to improve scientific understanding of climate change in Africa;
- £74 million to research and improve adaptation to climate change in Africa, Asia and Latin America;
- At least 10% of DFID humanitarian aid on reducing the impacts of disasters;
- £59 million to tackle climate change and speed up investment in cleaner energy; and
- £20 million through the UN to help poor countries adapt to climate change.
…and DFID is now spending more money than ever to lift people out of poverty
which will make them less vulnerable to climate change.
