Rolling back malaria in Nigeria
Malaria is one of the principal causes of sickness and death in Nigeria and
imposes an enormous socio-economic burden on the country. One of the most cost
effective ways of preventing malaria is through the use of insecticide treated
mosquito nets (ITN).
Since April 2002, DFID has been supporting the Futures Group (Europe) in implementing the malaria component of the Health Sector Reform programme to look at innovative ways of increasing people's interest in and use of insecticide-treated bed nets. Private sector distribution channels, and mechanisms which help the poor purchase nets are key to this. Increased net utilisation is a core component of the global initiative to 'roll back malaria'.
The success of the project's initial 18 months (at a cost of £1.2 million), has led to the planning of an additional 12 months. It has been an important player in the Roll Back Malaria Programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
