DFID Yemen: Our Current Programme

The UK has provided development assistance to Yemen since the early 1970s, with some interruptions. By 2003, we had a £2 million programme, focused on strengthening economic and financial management. In 2003, DFID decided to expand, focusing on health and education. Our expenditure rose year-on-year to £12m in 2007/8 and £20m this year.

This ten-year Arrangement affirms the long-term development partnership between the Government of Yemen and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK), acting through the Department for International Development (DFID). Africa Factsheet

In 2006/07 DFID spent an estimated £1.05 billion on bilateral and regional programmes to reduce poverty in Africa, of which 90% spent in our 16 priority countries. In 2007/08 DFID’s spend in Africa is set to rise further to £1.25 billion. DFID’s 16 priority countries, as agreed with HM Treasury in the 2005-08 Public service Agreement are: DRC, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Serria Leone, South Africa, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
