Research Strategy
Douglas Alexander, the Secretary of State for International Development,
launched DFID’s Research Strategy for
2008-2013 (1
mb) on 22 April 2008 at the London International Development Centre. In his
speech, the Secretary of State announced £1 billion of investment over the next
five years
and spoke about his vision for DFID Research to inform global policymaking.
“So my commitment is that DFID’s research funding … will have as its
objective the joining of research with policy and practice – to make a
difference. And that means not only commissioning new research, but looking at
what knowledge already exists, and making it newly relevant.”
This is DFID’s first substantive five-year strategy for research. It sets
out priorities for spending a budget which will double by 2010, as promised in
the 2006 White Paper “Eliminating Poverty: Making Government Work for the Poor”.
It is not an invitation to submit proposals.Over the coming months we will be looking at its future research
programme in order to meet these priorities. Central Research Department has
prepared an Implementation Timetable (164
kb) which gives external stakeholders information about the likely content
and timing of future scoping work and research competitions and calls for
proposals.
The new Research Strategy is a result of an extensive consultation with
stakeholders both in the UK and across the world. Around 1,000 researchers,
policymakers and representatives of civil society and the media were consulted
in the UK and seven developing countries, and a further 750 people contributed
their written views electronically.
A series of video clips which capture DFID staff’s views on the challenges
ahead are available through R4D. A range of 500 word commentaries written by
leading thinkers across the full spectrum of development research and
policymaking are also available on the research portal.
A number of background documents, including reports of the consultations are
available to support the strategy.
